Yackandandah Horseman, Eric Godward, teaches Natural Horsemanship from his Yackandandah base and at clinics throughout Australia, Japan and Ireland.

Eric, with over forty years of horsemanship behind him, has integrated the elements of natural horsemanship gained from his own experience, including working and communicating with brumbies in the wild. He has also integrated elements from the training that he has undertaken overseas.

He emphasises the importance of building the relationship between horse and owner through an understanding of the body language of the horse. Building on an understanding of the communication methods of the horse and its instinctive behaviour as a herd animal, Eric teaches the horse trainer/owner, to establish their leadership with the horse in such a way that it promotes a positive and effective partnership.

The success of his methods is demonstrated via the ease of taking an unstarted horse and introducing its first saddle, bridle and rider, without stress or danger to either the horse or himself.

Eric has demonstrated his methods of communication to achieve leadership and partnership at such events as the Wodonga Stallion Parade and to students studying the various Equine courses at Melbourne University's Glenormiston College, the Mounted Police Unit in Dublin and the Festina Lente Centre at Bray, Ireland.

Eric also conducts clinics for horse enthusiasts wishing to develop stronger and more effective partnerships with their horses at his property in Yackandandah, North East Victoria, or at venues of their own.

At these clinics, participants learn the fundamentals of learning to read the body language of their horse, how to establish clear communication, including positive and negative reinforcement and how to create the partnership.

The methods Eric employs rely on gaining the respect of the horse and its choice to be “with” its human leader. Some of the participants of Eric's clinics have never had previous contact with horses and astonish themselves with their capacity and confidence in working with them over the period of the clinic.

Others own horses presenting as problems; bad loading, biters or kickers, and learn how to use the principles of leadership, partnership and body language to remedy the problems.

See Clinics and Demonstrations for more details on Eric's methods.
